System Components 

Horticulture stakeholders in Kenya led by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority (AFFA -Horticulture Crops Directorate) have teamed up to establish a national electronic platform to support management  and  sharing of critical supply chain data in the horticulture  supply chain from production to distribution.The technology based platform will support small holder farmer compliance to  market requirements and improve the industry's ability to share information,monitor  and  manage food safety incidents more effectively.  

In partnership with USAID’s Kenya Agricultural Value Chain Enterprises (KAVES) The National Traceability Project was launched in March 2015 with the aim of developing a pilot automated horticulture traceability System.

The System is aimed at introducing increased transparency and visibility of horticulture supply chain activities through electronic registration of  export horticulture growers and critical supply chain processes from farm to distribution.  The Project is designed to enable the stakeholders to rapidly record, retrieve, share information on the farm origin of products in order to easily traceback, track non compliance to GAP and isolate food safety incidents like MRL Exceedance.

Some 12 horticulture and flower export companies and over 1,000 small holder farmers of French Beans and Peas have partnered with Horticulture Crops Directorate to test the system in its pilot phase.  Implementing a credible and comprehensive systems of traceability is one of the strategies by the industry aimed at strengthening food control systems, assuring customers  on food safety and enhancing the sector’s competitiveness.
